The Different Types of Business Energy Contracts

Fixed

For a Fixed, you are charged a set rate per unit of energy, this is measured in kWh, for the fixed term of your contract. This does not mean that your total charge on your bill will remain the same each month, it will change depending on the energy you are using. It’s the cost per kWh which is fixed.

Variable

In a Variable business energy contract the rate charge per unit of energy (kWh) is linked to the activity of the energy market. This means if it goes up so does the cost per unit, if it goes down the cost goes down. You rate per unit of energy will change throughout your contract.

Deemed and Out-of-Contract

A Deemed or Out of Contract situation can happen in a couple of instances;
You might have moved into a new business premise and a new contract hasn’t been agreed. Or;
Your current contract has ended, but your existing supplier is still supplying the energy that you use. This can happen if your original contract doesn’t specify what happens at the end of a contract or doesn’t have any renewal provisions set in place.

Being in this situation can often mean a supplier’s rates will be the most expensive so if this is you it’s important to shop around and arrange a new contract as soon as you’ve got your new business location and/or approach the end date of your contract to avoid paying high costs.

The Length of Contracts

With business energy the contract lengths can often be a longer time frame ranging from 12, 24, 36 or 48 months. Sometimes there are options available for odd numbers of months too.

Once you sign your energy contract you are tied into this contract until you enter a ‘Switching Window’, this window provides you with the opportunity to switch/renew your contract. This usually happens towards the end of your contract. It’s important to know your contract end dates and notice periods.

By working with us you have access to your own Customer Portal with all the details of your contracts that have been organised through us. We also keep in touch with you throughout your contract so that you never miss a window of opportunity to secure a better business energy contract.
